His Upbringing and Challenges

Prafull aspired to earn his master’s degree from IIM Ahmedabad before venturing into the restaurant business. To secure admission into a reputable MBA program like IIM, one must excel in the CAT exam, renowned for its rigorous nature. Prafull dedicated over 10 hours daily to his studies, driven by his ambition. While his parents wished him success, unfortunately, Prafull faced disappointment as he failed the CAT exam thrice in a row. Despite this setback, his parents continued to offer their unwavering support. However, Prafull succumbed to depression, rendering him unable to focus on anything.

Seeking solace, Prafull wandered around Ahmedabad and found comfort in the familiarity of the city. With his dream of pursuing an MBA from IIM shattered, he felt lost and directionless. Eventually, Prafull took up a job at McDonald’s, starting as a housekeeper. His dedication and hard work earned him quick promotions, eventually serving clients and managing orders. Despite being employed by a reputable corporation, Prafull harbored ambitions for more. He believed that true independence and self-growth came from entrepreneurship. Desiring to open a cafe, he confronted the obstacle of insufficient funds, leading him to abandon the idea.

MBA Chai Wala Started with a Bang

After much contemplation, Prafull resolved to establish a roadside tea stall, despite the risks involved, in pursuit of his aspirations. Despite societal perceptions that often belittle such ventures, associating them with lower socioeconomic status or limited education, Prafull remained undeterred. His primary concern, however, was his father’s opinion, causing him numerous sleepless nights. With courage and determination, Prafull inaugurated his first business venture as a tea vendor near McDonald’s on July 25, 2017, with a modest investment of just INR 8,000. Balancing his time between his job at McDonald’s from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and his tea stall in the evenings, Prafull embarked on his entrepreneurial journey.

Acquiring customers for a small business posed significant challenges, particularly in an environment saturated with tea stalls. Prafull differentiated his stall by serving tea in earthen pots accompanied by toast and tissues, captivating passersby and even engaging those in their vehicles. Prafull’s charismatic communication skills and unique serving style endeared him to patrons, drawing them to his stall.

As Prafull’s customer base expanded, neighboring tea stall vendors grew envious of his success. Forming a union, they ousted Prafull from the area. However, rather than succumbing to defeat, Prafull’s confidence soared. He struck a deal with the proprietor of a nearby hospital and secured a location adjacent to the facility. With an investment of INR 10,000, Prafull established a new tea stall, where he not only continued his signature tea service but also introduced snacks and coffee, captivating customers with his innovative approach once again.

Thus, in 2017, he made the bold decision to relinquish both his job and academic pursuits, opting instead to launch his venture by selling tea from a cart along SG Highway in Ahmedabad.
